Westlake, Florida is the newest city in Palm Beach County and one of the newest in the state. It sits on about 4,000 acres along Seminole Pratt Whitney Road, between The Acreage to the north and east and Loxahatchee Groves to the south, on land that was the Callery-Judge citrus grove for half a century. When disease made citrus unprofitable, the developer Minto bought the property in 2013, and in June 2016 the old Seminole Improvement District was converted into the City of Westlake.
The city is growing fast. The 2020 census counted only a few hundred residents; today several thousand people live in Westlake’s neighborhoods of new single-family homes, and the county’s approvals allow for more than 4,500 homes and millions of square feet of shops and offices at build-out. A town center, apartments, a large supermarket and a 50-acre public park are all in the plans, so the map changes from one year to the next. Several builders are still opening new neighborhoods, and a weekend drive through the city often passes model homes, fresh sod and roads that did not exist a year earlier.
For now, the things to do in Westlake, Florida are mostly community-scale. The city page covers the parks, the Seminole Pratt Whitney Road corridor and the yearly events the city hosts, from a fall 5K to a December holiday market. Most residents also lean on two established neighbors: Royal Palm Beach, with its big lakeside Commons Park and a county waterpark, and Wellington, the winter capital of show jumping and polo, with nature preserves and a busy town center.
Life in Westlake is organized around the outdoors and young families. Sidewalks and multiuse paths link the neighborhoods to the lakes, and evenings bring a steady stream of walkers, cyclists and children on scooters. The open fields on the city’s edges are a reminder that this was farm country only a decade ago, and sandhill cranes still wander the lawns. Because almost everything is new, the city is also a place to watch a community take shape: each year brings another plaza, another neighborhood or another tradition.
That combination makes Westlake a quiet, practical base for the western communities. Southern Boulevard and Okeechobee Boulevard lead east to Palm Beach International Airport in about half an hour, Lion Country Safari is minutes away, and our sister guides cover Loxahatchee and The Acreage next door. Westlake fl restaurants are few but growing, and our dining guide lists them along with favorites in Royal Palm Beach and Wellington.
